Adopting the Safe Space Programme and Community Awareness Towards the Eradication of Girl-Child Forced Marriages in Benue

JUNE 2025 – September 2026

MUNDO COOPERANTE is funding this project, which seeks to expand access to formal education for 100 vulnerable girls through a comprehensive school re-enrolment program. Support includes the payment of tuition fees for one academic session and the provision of essential school materials such as shoes, uniforms, and exercise books.

The project has also established a safe space where girls can participate in skills acquisition programs, leadership development sessions, counselling, and psychosocial support. This safe space was officially launched in October 2025. It brought together various stakeholders such as Government MDAs, partner organizations, traditional rulers, CSOs, beneficiaries, their parents, and well-wishers.

In addition, a reintegration program provides literacy and numeracy learning to help out-of-school girls bridge existing educational gaps. Community awareness activities are being implemented through advocacy to traditional ruler and religious leaders to strengthen protection systems against forced and early marriage, while targeted campaigns engage young boys as gender champions to promote positive norms and gender equality.

Through these interventions, girls are empowered to remain in school, delay marriage, and build the confidence and capacity to make informed choices about their futures.

Overall, this project will impact 500 adolescent girls in Benue State, Nigeria.

Many thanks to our funders, MUNDO COOPERANTE, for making this meaningful work possible.
